History has scattered our families across continents, oceans, and generations — leaving us randomly rooted and culturally abundant. Random Roots is the story of what happens when you follow those scattered roots back to their source and discover that the whole world was connected long before any of us had a passport.
This is not a traditional travel book. It is an honest, often humorous, deeply human collection of encounters — in village huts and city markets, on carnival streets and mountain roads — that reveal just how much we already share. The food, the fabric, the music, the dance, the way we grieve and celebrate and honor our elders — it is all, somehow, familiar.
Sprinkled throughout are quotes from friends and culture keepers, each rooted in a different country, each offering a window into the wisdom their communities carry. Together they form something greater than a travelogue — a living map of laughter, truth, and the kind of connection that no border has ever been able to stop.
Random Roots is an open invitation. To travel more curiously. To listen more closely. To look a stranger in the eye and recognize something of yourself looking back. To understand that no matter how far history has carried us from one another, our roots have always been reaching, underground, toward the same place. We were never as separate as we were told. Rooted in every story the world forgot to tell.

I have spent years traveling, listening, and learning from communities across the globe, and what I keep finding, in every country and every culture, is the same thing: US. Just as people take root and travel, so do our stories and experiences. Random Roots is the name I gave to that truth. The reminder that distance is a surface condition. Underground, where roots live, we never stopped being connected. As the youth in the Rwanda JR Troupe say (pictured), “Together, we are one!"
